US drops LARGEST non-nuclear bomb in Afghanistan

The US army just dropped a Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb on an ISIS tunnel in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar, demonstrating its destructive power.General John W. Nicholson of the US Central Command said in a statement: “As ISIS-K’s losses have mounted, they are using IEDs, bunkers, and tunnels to thicken their defense.”He added: “This is the right munition to reduce these obstacles and maintain the momentum of our offensive against ISIS-K.”

What is the Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb?

The GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb is a large non-nuclear explosive in the hands of the American military.

The MOAB weighs in at around 10,300 kg (22,600 lb) and is just over 9 m long in length. It has been lovingly dubbed the Mother Of All Bombs by the US military.

The explosive’s main purpose is to clear out swathes of land and targets hidden in canyons or caves.

In design, the bomb is similar to the  BLU-82 bomb which was extensively used during the Vietnam war to clear out heavily wooded jungle areas. The MOAB was then developed following the BLU-82 to continue the psychological and moral-breaking effect it had on enemy soldiers in Iraq.Only 15 of these terrifying weapons have been created since the war in Iraq and today is the first time one has been detonated since at least 2007.

How destructive, is it?

At the time of its creation, the bomb was touted as the most powerful explosive in the army’s arsenal, bar none but the atomic bomb.

Even more terrifyingly, Russia has claimed to have created an even more powerful non-nuclear device – ‘The Mother of All Bombs’.

The bomb is loaded with a Tritonal explosive – a mixture of 80 per cent TNT and 20 per cent aluminum powder.

The additional aluminum podwer increases the bombs heat wave and makes it roughly 18 per cent more powerful the TNT by itself. But the GPS guided explosive is impressive on its own and it apocalyptic blasts wipes out everything around. The Afghanistan blast is believed to have been 300m in radius.Adam Stump, a Pentagon spokesperson, confirmed the bomb dropped on ISIS today was delivered by a Lockheed MC-130 military plane.
